Kent Online: Snow White Raises Thousands for Hospice

February 1st, 2017

kentonline17aThe Assembly Hall Theatre’s panto, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, raises thousands for the Hospice in the Weald

Generous panto punters raised more than £7,000 for a local charity during the Christmas and New Year run in Tunbridge Wells. The funds were raised for the Pembury-based Heart of Kent Hospice at performances of the Assembly Hall Theatre panto Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which starred Su Pollard of 80s sitcom Hi-de-Hi!

The annual collection came to £7,320.61, raised from  bucket collections at the end of each performance during the three-week run.

The hospice provides compassionate, individual, holistic and supportive care for patients with a terminal illness, their families, and carers in west Kent and East Sussex. The money raised could pay for pre or post-bereavement counselling sessions for 20 patients or family members who are seeking additional support.

Beth Swarbrigg, from the hospice, said: “The theatre has been supporting Hospice in the Weald for over 18 years and we are delighted that once again the theatre has chosen the Hospice to benefit from their annual pantomime collection.

kentonline16cChristmas Day habits from onesies and PJs to eating, sleeping and being with the family

Is Christmas Day all about presents and onesies in your house? Here, the stars share how they spend their day.

SU POLLARD: Actress Su Pollard will be hanging up her Wicked Queen costume for the day and escaping family-friendly festivities in favour of a more grown-up affair.

“I will spend it with my friend from Blackpool. I have known him years and I was at Blackpool last year to see him for Christmas Day. I do like Christmas, but definitely no cooking for me – I get everything from M&S. There also won’t be a child in sight: I get my kids kick at the panto.”

Kent Online: Su Pollard Stars as The Wicked Queen

December 7th, 2016

kentonline16aA great new panto themed interview with Su, published today, by Kent Online.

Tunbridge Wells: Hi-de-Hi star Su Pollard stars as the Wicked Queen at the Assembly Hall Theatre

Hi-de-Hi star Su Pollard will be showing her very wicked side in panto this year.

The star of the classic BBC show, will play the Wicked Queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs – and she plans to be as wicked as possible.

“I’m never scared to be evil,” she said. “I love the Wicked Queen. I love the ‘evility’ – it is the fun element. But my character is wicked with a twinkle. But I am absolutely acting. I’m very mean to Snow White. I love it when the children cry – I think I have done my job.”

“When they see me afterwards, they don’t know whether to be excited or scared..”

“I do panto every year and I love it. I did my first when I was about 18. You’ve got to have the longevity before you can be a Wicked Queen – you can’t look as if you’re 17.”

Su played loveable Maplins chalet maid Peggy Ollerenshaw in Hi-de-Hi back in the 1980s, and still keeps up with her pals from the cast.

“I see my friends from Hi-de-Hi regularly, especially Ruth Madoc. We all get on so well. We were very lucky that we had a great time with Hi-de-Hi.”
