Freeview: Freeview’s TV Treasures

hidehi15cIf your regular telly viewing rarely takes you beyond a few favourite channels, maybe it’s time to branch out and explore some of Freeview’s hidden treasures.

There’s plenty to enjoy, from long-running dramas that have stood the test of time to classic comedies that’ll never go out of style.

So, grab the remote and start discovering the great selection of hidden gems coming up this week.

Hi-de-Hi!: Drama (Freeview Channel 20)
Saturday 21 April at 5pm, 5:40pm and 6:20pm

This is one of the great British sitcoms from the writing team of Jimmy Perry and David Croft (who also gave us Dad’s Army), recreating the chaotic fun of a seaside holiday camp in the 1950s. There are some memorable characters in this show, including the fearsome Chief Yellowcoat Gladys Pugh (played by Ruth Madoc), the scatty chalet maid Peggy Ollerenshaw (Su Pollard) and Jeffrey Fairbrother (Simon Cadell), the Cambridge professor turned entertainment manager who struggles to resist Gladys’s amorous advances. In tonight’s episodes, Peggy gets her big chance to be a Yellowcoat and Jeffrey thinks the campers deserve some culture.

The Meldrum Vases. (Series 2, Episode 4) Alf has hidden some money in one of his Lorship’s antique vases, Unfortunately Lord Meldrum has donated three identical vases to the Bishop’s charity auction for distressed gentlewomen, James and Ivy are in a race to stop Alf retrieving the money.

You Rang, M’Lord?: Drama: Tuesday 17th April: 4pm
The Wounds Of War. (Series 2, Episode 5) To protect his employer, Alf tells Sir Ralph that Meldrum was wounded in the Artilley. Ive is over the moon when James agrees to take her to the pictures Mrs Lipton is convinced that Alf’s divorce is being held up by his wife.

You Rang, M’Lord?: Drama: Wednesday 18th April: 4pm
Stranger In The Night. (Series 2, Episode 6) James in embarrassed when his father arrives at the house on the run from the police. The servants decide to hid him until they can arrange for him to flee the country.

You Rang, M’Lord?: Drama: Thursday 19th April: 4pm
Royal Flush. (Series 2, Episode 7) Excitement runs through the household when it’s announced that the King and Queen of Dalmatia are coming to dinner, although Mrs Lipton is upset when she finds out she will not be doing the catering. In addition, Noel Coward is expected to join them after the opening night of his new play.

You Rang, M’Lord?: Drama: Friday 20th April: 4pm
Please Look After The Orphans. (Series 3, Episode 1) Alf is being pestered by Mrs Lipton to finalise his divorce so he gets an old music hall friend to agree to pose as Mrs Stokes. Meanwhile he has a brain wave to make some money by fooling Mrs Litpton into baking some cakes which she thinks are destined for the local orphanage.

Money Talks. (Series 2, Episode 3). Lady Lavender throws her money out of the window and into the street. Naturally some of the money goes astray when Alf gets his hands on it.

Lift Up Your Minds. (Series 2, Episode 3). Ex-professor Fairbrother decides to bring some culture into the entertainments programme by presenting a recital of classical music. Naturally the campers are less than keen.

Beg, Borrow or Steal. (Series 1, Episode 6). Alf is being blackmailed by the local pawn broker into letting him burgle the house. Lord Meldrum allows Cissy and Poppy to hold an evening of progressive poetry in the dining room. At last the relationship between Alf and Ivy is revealed to James.

You Rang, M’Lord?: Drama: Wednesday 11th April: 4pm
Labour or Love. (Series 2, Episode 1). Lord Meldrum gives Teddy an ultimatum – marry Madge Cartwright or be sent to work in his factory. Teddy thinks it’s a bluff but finds that his brother means every word. Alf discovers that Lady Lavender has got money stashed under her bed and schemes to relieve her of the burden.

You Rang, M’Lord?: Drama: Friday 6th April: 4pm
Love and Money. (Series 1, Episode 4). Lord Meldrum thinks that Lady Lavender has gone too far and wants her declared mentially unstable, whilst Teddy is determined to pay Ivy a visit in her room no matter how dangerous the route. A party thrown for Miss Cissy’s birthday brings a few surprises.

Lord Meldrum’s car is vandalised – someone has daubed ‘fornicator’ on the side which causes panic when the Bishop wants to use the vehicle.

Pilot. The casts of Hi-De-Hi! and It Ain’t Half Hot, Mum intermingle in the first episode of the chucklesome sitcom with butlers galore, written by Jimmy Perry and David Croft. London, 1927: Alf Stokes and his daughter Ivy are given the boot from their jobs on the music halls. Alf decides that he has no option but to go back into service as a butler. When he arrives at the residence of Lord Meldrum some familiar faces await him. Starring: Paul Shane, Su Pollard, Jeffrey Holland, Donald Hewlett.
