The Sussex Newspaper: Snow White Review

December 17th, 2016

snowwhite16vThe special thing that pantomime has over almost all other theatrical performances is that it is the one production that promises “something for everyone” and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells, delivers heartily on that promise.

From the opening “village scene” right the way through to the inevitable wedding, this production has several superb sets, many marvelous melodies and cleverly constructed characters – all wrapped up in the most traditional of family pantomimes.

… With some rather unexpected thundering rock music to accompany her first entrance, Su Pollard is the epitome of a naughty and flirty Wicked Queen. Mean enough to get the huge Tunbridge Wells audience booing loudly, but funny enough to get those same people laughing their socks off, Su is the consummate professional.

The performance runs at a good pace, but enough time is left for Su to reappear in a number of different costumes topped off with some outrageously coloured wigs, and for her to try to seduce the Prince – poor man!

My Tunbridge Wells: Snow White Review

December 17th, 2016

snowwhite16jjThe panto season at Assembly Hall Theatre Tunbridge Wells is now in full swing with daily performances of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs by UK Productions. I took my eldest boy along to see it and here’s what we thought…

This was my son’s second panto as we went to see Cinderella at the Assembly Hall last year. He was keen to get involved in the festive spirit so wore his Father Christmas outfit which seemed to go down well with our fellow spectators. As he is only 5 years old, I had pre-warned him that the wicked queen (played by Su Pollard) might be a little scary

However with sprinkles of Su’s super humour scattered throughout the performance, along with some outrageous outfits, the wicked queen was less scary and more mesmerising by the end of the panto. And boy does she have a great singing voice – this was her 38th pantomime so she is a complete pro!

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Don’t Miss It!

December 16th, 2016

The reaction to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has been overwhelmingly positive. Su, her panto cast mates, and all who work on the production, have received an incredible response from everyone who has attended a performance at the Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells since the show opened one week ago. We say the same every Christmas, and about each and every panto Su stars in – proving each year Su is one of the UK’s finest panto stars.

What’s Good To Do: Snow White Review

December 16th, 2016

snowwhite16ddSnow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells
14 December to 2 January 2017

Everyone loves a good pantomime. For me it is part of my Christmas experience. I always went with my Mum as a child and it is something I want to pass onto my children. In my opinion, pantomime is good clean family fun, so did we all enjoy it? …

… There must be a baddy. TV favourite and pantomime regular Su Pollard played the part of the Wicked Queen. I grew up watching Hi De Hi as a child so the opportunity to see Su perform on stage was a treat for me and she did not disappoint. She had an incredible balance between playing the bad guy but also capturing the audience to the point where you felt yourself drawn towards her too. This is quite a balance to achieve and is no doubt assisted by her wealth of panto experience (she has performed in over 35 pantomimes!) I am not sure my husband will ever be the same again having seen Su Pollard in leopard print pyjamas but what a character. Her humour was incredible and her performance nothing short of breath taking…. an absolute pleasure to watch as long as you didn’t touch the frock!
