Pocket Size Theatre: Snow White Review

December 14th, 2017

snowwhite17aaThe 1937 Disney film defined this title and sometimes it feels awkward to squeeze it into the Pantomime format but when all the elements come together it is a title that will delight Christmas audiences. This UK Production show written by Andrew Ryan, with a strong ensemble cast, all the essential Pantomime business and some of the original Disney tunes certainly does this and credit must go to the whole team under the direction of Chris Nelson. Rarely even in pantomime do you hear an audience this engaged in a production, even the theatre foyer is dressed to get them in the mood before the start.

The show is driven with loads of energy by Andy Collins as Muddles (7th season at Waterside) and La Voix as nurse (another experienced pantomime Dame). They work very well together from their first entrances, Muddles riding a my little pony and Nurse singing Fame and in a gag filled Mastermind parody. The running gag of the missing pots and pans provides further comic moments leading to a show stopping “Twelve days of Christmas”, one of the best you will see, with amazing audience involvement and even Company Stage Manager, Robb Mookhoek joining the fun in the auditorium with a super soaker.

Opposite them is another excellent pantomime veteran, Su Pollard as the Wicked Queen establishing her own catch phrase “Don’t touch the frock” and belting out a few good songs including “One way or another” as she make her first entrance through the working portcullis.

What’s Good To Do: Snow White Review

December 14th, 2017

snowwhite17bbIt was my pleasure to attend the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury last night (12 December 2017) to watch the Christmas pantomime, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, with my daughter and some friends. We were very lucky as it was press night, there seemed to be an added excitement in the air. We were directed upstairs where we found huge Snow White and her Dwarfs made from balloons, (there was a silent auction going on for charity) but the auditorium was dressed beautifully downstairs too; I saw baskets of apples, small plants with apples on the tables, leaves around the booking office and branches around the refreshments stall, for me all these touches added to the experience, I loved it. Staff as always were on hand to direct and help with any questions, the toilets were clean and tidy.

You can’t beat a good pantomime and after last night I am really in the Christmas spirit!

Su’s Panto Career: Decades of Festive Fun!

December 8th, 2017

snowwhite17s

This very evening Su is reprising her Wicked Queen for another month of boos and hisses, as well as lots of festive fun, drama and music, at the Aylesbury Waterside in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Su is a true panto stalwart, it’s always been one of her specialities and she has been both principal boy and girl across the UK in Goldilocks, Babes In The Woods, Pinocchio, Jack And The Beanstalk, Mother Goose, Aladdin, and Dick Whittington.

In 2002 Su took on the role of the Wicked Queen in Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs, her first outing as a “baddie”. A role she enjoyed playing so much she reprised it for Christmas 2003, 2005, 2006 and almost every year since!

Though in both 2010 and 2011 Su embraced Annie The Musical instead of panto, playing another “Baddie”, Miss Hannigan.

Su’s panto co-stars have included many top names in the acting profession, and much loved showbiz personalities; Matthew Kelly, Bernard Cribbins, Bernie Winters, Robyn Askwith, Gordon Honeycombe, Ray Meagher, Michael Elphick, Don Maclean, Peter Blake, Paul Danan, Louise English, Shaun Curry, Christopher Lillicrap, David Hasselhoff, and Chris Jarvis to name but a few!
